America fell in love with Duck Dynasty’s Robertson clan in a big way this year, sending their Christmas album to the top of the Billboard charts and making their A&E show one of the most searched terms on Yahoo in 2013. And while the Louisiana duck call moguls have been outspoken about their faith and family values, they’ve also encountered their fair share of bumps along the way.

In the documentary I Am Second that aired last month, family patriarch Phil Robertson and his wife, Miss Kay, revealed Phil’s past battles with alcoholism and infidelity. Though somewhat shocking, the public appreciated the longtime couple’s honesty.

When Wetpaint Entertainment spoke exclusively with Miss Kay — who recently released her first cookbookMiss Kay’s Duck Commander Kitchen — she opened up about how her life has changed since joining a reality show.

While one might think that a family-oriented mother and grandmother like Kay would be apprehensive about joining a reality TV show, we were surprised to learn that it didn’t weigh too heavily on her.

“I wouldn’t say that I’ve had worries about it,” she told us. “But I will say that our whole family is of one mind in that preserving our love for each other and our faith and God is something we won’t let anything get in between.”

It’s this enduring faith that Miss Kay says has helped to keep the large family together, even as they encounter tough media attention: “Like all worthwhile and important things, we try to keep first things first in everything we do. Family and faith are first to us — so we work hard at keeping it that way."

And the positives of reality TV fame? For Miss Kay, it’s being able to expand her horizons and encounter new people.

“I sure have traveled more than I used to,” she shared. “And you won’t be surprised to know that my favorite thing about traveling is meeting all those new people. People are people wherever you go — and I love interacting with them.” And we love interacting with you, too, Miss Kay!

Miss Kay’s new cookbook, Miss Kay’s Duck Commander Kitchen: Faith, Family, and Food — Bringing Our Home to Your Table, is now available for purchase on Amazon.
