Last night’s Super Bowl XLVIII was a bit of a snooze (sorry Broncos!), so the only bright spots were Bruno Mars’s groovy halftime show and those highly-anticipated commercials. Those of us who were still paying attention after the first half may have caught Time Warner Cable’s all-star ad for the event, including the Duck Dynasty guys… well, three-fourths of them.
The cable provider was clearly looking to benefit off of the popularity of the A&E reality hit by featuring the Robertson men — Willie, Si, and Jase — alongside megastars like P. Diddy, Jimmy Fallon, Drake, and True Blood’s Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin. However, it seemed like an obvious omission to not feature Papaw Phil with his brother and two sons, seeing as he is the show’s lead star (and founder of Duck Commander).
We can’t say we’re totally shocked by the decision. The reality star has come under a lot of fire since he called being gay “not logical” — along with some other unsavory and graphic things — in a GQ interview released in December. He was suspended then reinstated on Duck Dynasty, and though the show’s ratings initially took a dip, they seem to be rebounding. But perhaps Time Warner didn’t want to take the risk that America hasn’t fully forgiven Phil for his comments.
On the other hand, Phil’s absence may be completely his own doing. The Louisiana native has proven himself to be prone to skipping major media gigs — such as an interview with Barbara Walters for her 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013 special — to go duck hunting. If you can’t show up for Babs, you probably won’t be doing a measly commercial… even if it is for something as major as the Super Bowl.
Did you notice Phil’s disclusion from the Super Bowl ad? Tell us in the comments below.
