True Detective's Season 1 came to a close last night with a controversial finale. Between bouts of defending the HBO hit's character-centric ending or grousing about the unresolved plotlines, fans are already turning their attention toward Season 2, which will feature an all new story and cast. The show has already taken us on a twisted journey involving dark rituals, rape, and murder. What could possibly be next?

Creator and writer Nic Pizzolatto hasn't dished any specifics about the next installment of the anthology series, but he has hinted at the general outline of Season 2.

In a postmortem on the show Nic told Entertainment Weekly that we can expect the following when we tune in to True Detective next year: "Hard women, bad men, and the secret occult history of the U.S. transportation system." He told HitFix almost the exact same thing, word for word. He definitely has his pitch in place!

Nic mentioning women first in that description is probably not a mistake. True Detective got some flack for its focus on men and the fact that basically every female character was a wife, stripper, or prostitute, but it sounds like that could change next season.

As for the "occult" part of this description, let's just say that after Season 1, we're not surprised to see that word pop up.
