Don’t get us wrong, we were enjoying the Orphan Black Season 2 premiere — which first aired on April 19 — just fine, but the sophomore season opener really took things to the next level in the hour’s final moments. If you haven’t seen the Season 2 premiere yet we highly-recommend you click away; otherwise, feel free to keep reading!

We were convinced that evil clone Helena was dead as a doornail in last year’s Season 1 finale (ya know, after Sarah shot her), but much to our surprise the Ukrainian clone-killer stumbled into a hospital in the final seconds of the April 19 installment. She was covered in blood and declared “My sestra shot me” before a horde of doctors and nurses whisked her away so she could receive medical attention, and she was obviously still alive.

Admittedly, we were pretty shocked by the reveal that Helena’s alive, but apparently the BBC America show’s creators, Graeme Manson and John Fawcett, had it planned from the very beginning. Graeme and John chatted with Entertainment Weekly about the premiere shocker and revealed that it was actually a long time coming, despite the fact that last year they both confirmed Helena was six feet under.

“It was bald face lying. We just did it as best we could with every single interviewer that would talk to us,” John explained of the fib the duo happily told.

“It was never, ever a discussion of whether we kill her or not, she was very much going to be alive and we kind of had an evil plan for why she was alive, which will be revealed soon,” he continued. “I’m hoping the audience is going to be really excited that she’s back and then the question is, how did she survive?”

“Evil plan,” you say?! If we weren’t intrigued before then we certainly are now!

As for the “How did Helena survive?” query, we’re theorizing that her inability to die might have something to do how Kira lived through getting hit by a car in Season 1…

We’re you shocked to learn that Helena is still alive? Do you have theories of your own to share? Let us know in the comments below!

Orphan Black Season 2 airs Saturday nights at 9 p.m. ET on BBC America.
