It doesn’t have to be Halloween for people to want to get creeped out; the Showtime premiere of Penny Dreadful proves just that!

The premiere — Season 1, Episode 1 (“Night Work”) — brought in strong ratings, even topping other huge hits for the network. According to a Showtime press release, the series debuted to a grand total of 2.3 million viewers across various platforms. Not too shabby, eh?

If you count just last night’s audience, a grand total of 1.443 million viewers tuned into the show, beating the numbers for both Homeland and Masters of Sex by 5 percent (both saw 1.38 million viewers for their debuts). The series premiere at 10 p.m. brought in 872,000 viewers, but add in those who caught the premiere on YouTube, Showtime on Demand, Showtime Anytime, and various others and you get a whopping 2.3 million total. Since it premiered on Showtime’s free premiere weekend, non-subscribers were not included in the viewership — which means the number is probably even higher.

Even more impressive, Penny Dreadful was a big win for Showtime in regards to the key 18-49 demo, with 62 percent of the audience falling into this targeted range. The network is touting that this is the youngest-skewing audience for one of their shows since the Dexter premiere in 2006 (which snagged a 65 percent in the demo).

It looks as though Showtime has found another hit. Hopefully this means we’ll get to see a lot more of Josh Hartnett’s amazing acting chops put to work. After all, this season is only eight episodes long!

We’re already on the lookout for a Season 2 renewal!
