Now that American Idol and The Voice have announced their winners and aired the finales, you’re going to need a new show to watch this summer. Luckily, ABC is premiering its newest singing competition show, Rising Star, on June 22, and it’s changing the game of reality singing.
How so? The show’s results happen instantly, and it all comes down to you, the viewer. Intrigued? Here are just a few reasons why you need to tune in.
A first in American television history. Sure, we’ve watched our fair share of music competitions on the small screen, but Rising Star is the first of its kind and a show like this has never been done before for American viewers. Ever.
No more judges. Forget a panel of judges or those swivel chairs. Rising Star doesn’t have a team of stars who decide the fate of your favorite singers. Instead, you’re the judge and you get to decide who advances in real time.
But it doesn’t disappoint in star power. The show features Josh Groban as the host and a trio of experts — rapper Ludacris, pop sensation Kesha, and country favorite Brad Paisley — who simply offer up guidance and feedback.
It’s all in the way you swipe. When a contestant enters the stage, a 90-foot wide interactive wall separates them from the audience, so you can only judge the singer based on his or her vocal prowess (á la The Voice). If you like what you hear, use the Rising Star’s app to vote yes (by swiping right) or no (by swiping left) on your smartphone or tablet. If the singer’s performance garners enough votes, the wall rises to reveal who’s there and he or she move on to the next round.
Don’t miss the premiere of Rising Star this Sunday, June 22, at 9 p.m. ET on ABC, and be sure to download the free Rising Star app. You’ll need it to vote on all of the show’s performances!
