TV romance is often built around the all-important will-they-or-won’t-they model. But, what happens when the tension falls flat? We can’t help but partially feel that way about Vampire Diaries’ Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) this season. After an all-too-brief honeymoon period at the season’s start, the couple has devolved back into will-they-or-won’t-they territory. The problem is: now that we know they probably will, it feels a bit tired. Are TVD’s Damon and Elena the most frustrating couple on TV?
Yes, fix it: Much of the Season 5 frustration concerning Delena has come not because these two characters no longer have red, hot chemistry — frankly, we can’t ever see that happening — but because their progression has made little sense. At this point, we’re as confused as Elena: why aren’t these two together again? They’re destructive... or something. This might be an interesting theme to explore if the show hadn’t already explored it. TV frustration happens when you see something that has already happened before, when character dynamics feel redundant. There are many stories TVD could have chosen to explore with Delena in Season 5. Unfortunately, they chose one of the least interesting -- an issue exacerbated by the fact that it depended on a random devolvement of Damon’s character. We haven’t given up on these two lovebirds yet, but this show better step it up in Season 6 because right no, Delena might just be the most frustrating couple on TV.
No, but only because another TV couple has them beat: Most frustrating couple on TV? That’s quite the competitive category. After all, this is a television landscape that includes Scandal’s Olivia and Fitz. And that’s not even counting TV couples that are frustrating for the way in which the TV show keeps them apart. We watched all of How I Met Your Mother, only to discover that this wasn’t even a love story about Ted and The Mother at all! Frustration Central. Delena may have its moments of frustration, but they are still miles ahead of so many other couples on TV when it comes to not constantly frustrating us. Did you see that kiss in last week’s episode?
Nope, Delena still rocks: Or maybe you’re digging the Delena will-they-or-won’t-they? After all, no one does it better than Ian and Nina. These two could have a conversation about celery and it would probably still be supremely watchable and simmering with chemistry. Perhaps, this is one of those TV relationship ruts that we’ll feel better for having suffered through if only because the inevitable reunion is that much sweeter for it. Plus, with Damon set to prove himself a hero in the Season 5 finale, we’re thinking Delena is about to get even more epic.
