Two pop stars are set to go supernova tonight on MTV with the Miley Cyrus: Unplugged special — as Madonna joins Miley Cyrus on stage for a barebones mash-up of Madge's 2000 song "Don't Tell Me" and Miley's 2013 hit "We Can't Stop" — and an accompanying hoedown!
In an MTV featurette — embedded below — Miley reveals why she called upon the Queen of Pop.
"I wanted to have someone here that wasn't the obvious [choice], and something that was different than [what's] on my record — something that people wouldn't really expect," the 21-year-old explains. "Even I didn't expect Madonna to be necessarily down to something like Unplugged with me."
"I grew up listening to Madonna, and I love what she represented," she continues. "For me, it's what I try to represent for girls now … not being afraid of sexuality and really being who you want to be and doing what you wanna do."
The Bangerz singer explains that "We Can't Stop" and "Don't Tell Me" both share that same message, which is why the two powerhouse singers decided to combine them.
"Doesn't matter if you're gay straight, everyone is trying to figure out what their freedom is," Miley elaborates. "And so [what's important is] talking and not being afraid to talk to every different type of human being and [making] them know that it's cool to be who you are."
Miley is also grateful that Madonna is an equally ballsy and opinionated performer: "I'm glad I can be on stage with someone that isn't afraid of me or what I'm going to do. She's so about it and about making a statement. That's what being a real entertainer is."
Miley Cyrus: Unplugged airs tonight, Wednesday, January 29, at 9 p.m. on ET.
