Another sad day in the rap community came on December 29, 2013, when Atlanta rapper Waka Flocka Flame’s brother KayO Redd died suddenly. The aspiring spitter’s cause of death has yet to be confirmed, with conflicting reports saying he either committed suicide or was shot in his old neighborhood in Atlanta.
27-year-old Waka posted two messages about the tragedy on Twitter, first writing “God please bless me,” and then following it up hours later with a second tweet. In the latter, the Brick Squad Monopoly rapper tweeted “Ya Big Brother love you Kayo,” and posted a montage of his younger brother titled “R.I.P. KayO” set to KayO and OJ da Juiceman’s song, “At the Top.”
The younger rapper had just released his latest mixtape, Redd Kisses, and even tweeted about it midday on the day of his death, encouraging fans to download and vote for it. KayO was a member of older bro Waka’s Brick Squad Monopoly, a splinter cell of Gucci Mane’s 1017 Brick Squad label.
His mother, Debra Antney — who is also Gucci Mane’s aunt and former manager — also took to social media to mourn her loss, writing “I just lost another son.” In 2000, she lost another son in a car accident.
This story is developing and will be updated with more information as it comes available. Our thoughts are with Waka Flocka Flame’s family, and the Atlanta rap community in this tragic time.
