All over the news right now is NBA star Dwyane Wade, who recently got engaged to actress Gabrielle Union, and just confirmed he fathered a 1-month-old child with an ex while he and Gabby were on a break. Don’t know much about Dwyane? We’re not always the most avid sports fans, but we did some digging, and here’s what we found out about Gabby’s man.
1. He Left College to Join the NBA
Dwyane kicked butt in high school, on the south side of Chicago, shining in his junior year after a growth spurt. He got three bids from colleges who wanted him to play at their schools, but ended up choosing Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Though he struggled at first, and missed his first year due to academic ineligibility, he led the team to the Final Four after beating top-seeded Kentucky University in 2003. He went into the NBA draft after playing only two seasons of college ball. He was the first Marquette player to be drafted in the first round, by the Miami Heat. Which leads us to...
2. He Plays for the Miami Heat
Since going into the NBA for the 2003–2004 season, the 31-year-old has only gotten better, winning three championships, including one this year.
3. He’s an Olympian
When he’s not winning big trophies, he wins medals. Olympic ones, to be precise. In his first year in the NBA, in 2004, he was part of the bronze medal-winning Athens team — the first time the USA had failed to win the gold since 1992. In 2008, he helped the so-called “Redeem Team” win the gold once again, in Beijing. The team also picked up the top prize in London in 2012, but Dwyane didn’t make the trip.
4. His Current Salary Is Over $18 Million Per Year
Looking at his bank account almost makes us wish we were athletes. When Dwyane started out with the Heat 10 years ago, his salary was around 2.5 million. But after the 2006–2007 season, he got a $10 million salary bump, despite missing 31 (of 82) games. Last season, he made over $17 million, then got another million bump after winning the championship. He’s slated to make over $20 million for the 2014–2015 season. Man, if only we hadn’t skipped gym class so often…
5. He’s Big on Charity
Yes, he makes a ton of money, but he also gives back a lot. He started a charitable organization in 2003, is involved in community organizations in Chicago and South Florida, raised money for relief in Haiti, bought his mom a church, and gives 10% of his salary to a church in Chicago.
6. He Has a Messy Past With His High School Sweetheart
In 2002, he married high school girlfriend Siohvaughn Funches. He filed for divorce in 2007, but it wasn’t granted until 2010, and legal battles over custody, alimony, and the like carried on until recently. His ex went through 16 different lawyers throughout the process, and she staged a sit-in protest, alleging that she was on the street because of him when she spoke to The Chicago Sun-Times. In the divorce, Dwyane is reported to have given his ex, with whom he has two kids, a house in Chicago, four cars, and support.
7. He Has Three Kids
Dwyane has three children. With ex-wife Siohvaughn, he welcomed Zaire Blessing Dwyane Wade (February 4, 2002) and Zion Malachi Airamis Wade (May 29, 2007). On December 30 — nine days after announcing his engagement to girlfriend Gabrielle Union — it was announced that Dwyane fathered a son with a longtime friend, Aja Metoyer. Xavier Zechariah Wade was born November 20, 2013, and was conceived during a break early this year with Gabby, whom Dwyane started dating in 2009. Dwyane has called his son a “blessing,” and Gabrielle has yet to speak publicly about the news.
