Outkast member Andre 3000 aka André Benjamin is dusting off his acting hat and coming back to the big screen as the lead character in the Jimi Hendrix biopic, All Is By My Side, and we’ve finally got a couple sneak peeks of the “Ms. Jackson” singer in action.

In the following clip, we see Jimi (Andre) have a chat with his friend and former lover Linda Keith (portrayed by Imogen Poots) before he goes off to one of his first major performances alongside other notable musical legends at the time.

While we’re definitely captivated by Linda’s overwhelming feeling of being a mere muse to rock n’ rollers, we are even more taken aback by Andre’s transformation. No doubt he’s got the look — the electro afro, and flashy jacket — but it also sounds like Andre went all in to master the craft of the Seattle rocker’s speech and mannerisms. Suffice it to say, Andre
is Jimi.

Unfortunately, we won’t get to hear Andre perform any of Jimi’s classic hits as Jimi Hendrix’s estate is none too keen about the movie and will not permit the usage of his original works. Instead, we will be graced with Andre’s renditions of Jimi’s classic covers of songs like “Wild Thing,” “Hound Dog,” Muddy Waters’s “Mannish Boy,” and Elmore James’s “Bleeding Heart.”

No word on when the movie will hit screens nationwide, but it’s set for screening March 12, 2014 at Austin’s Paramount Theatre during South by Southwest 2014.
