If you haven’t heard the news, Academy Award-nominated director Lee Daniels is bringing his motion picture talents to the small screen with Fox’s new drama, Empire. Reuniting Academy Award-nominated actors Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson (Hustle & Flow) as Lucious and Cookie Lyon, the show focuses on ex-wife Cookie’s quest for revenge, and Lucious’s search for a successor to his vast record label empire.

Luscious learns some life-changing news which prompts him into deciphering which of his three sons — Andre the businessman (Trai Byers), Jamal the musician (Jussie Smollett), or Hakeem the budding rapper (Bryshere Gray) — is worthy enough to take his throne. To make things more complicated, his ex-wife, Cookie, has been released from prison on good behavior after 17 years and has one thing on her mind: getting half the successful music empire Luscious built with money she earned while dealing drugs.

It goes without saying that the Lyons have their share of family drama. From the trailer, we learn of Luscious’s discontent with Jamal’s homosexuality, his dissatisfaction with Hakeem’s entitlement, and disappointment in Andre’s lack of finesse. Cookie is desperate to get what’s hers and will stop at nothing short of using her own children to get it. We see that the brothers will be pitted against each other, and there’s a dirty little secret that can make their whole empire crumble, leading us to wonder who will be left standing in the rubble.

The show will also reunite Lee with Academy Award-nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe, who he worked with on Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire.

From the looks of it, this show just may be one to watch this fall, and you can bet your bottom dollar our eyes will be on this Empire.

Empire will premiere this fall on FOX.
