It looks like everyone who got their panties in a bunch over Zendaya Coleman’s casting as Aaliyah in the upcoming biopic can breathe a sigh of relief. The Disney star and former Dancing With the Stars contestant bowed out from the film and production has been halted.
While many may think that Zendaya’s decision to ditch her on-screen portrayal could’ve been the result of relentless backlash from fans and Aaliyah’s on family, the dancer/singer said it was all due to production problems.
“I really just thought that after starting the project, I feel like there were things that were missing and things that weren’t 100 percent taken care of. And I feel like if I’m going to portray one of my idols and someone I feel so strongly about, then it has to be done right. It has be done 120 percent,” Zendaya told Entertainment Tonight, adding “I felt like it wasn’t there, so it just wasn’t a good choice for me.”
“I have too much respect for her to do anything less…” Zendaya continued. As it stands, production of the film has been shut down indefinitely. According to Lifetime, there were problems with Aaliyah’s family — with one member saying that Aaliyah’s life should be a major motion film instead of a made-for-TV flick — as well as legal issues with obtaining rights to use Aaliyah’s music in the film.
Looks like we’re back to the drawing board with bringing Aaliyah’s life to any screen.
