The Mad Men fans out there know that while Don Draper (Jon Hamm) may appear to rule the roost, there’s another Dawn in town who really makes sure life runs on schedule. We are, of course, talking about Dawn Chambers, the ad man’s always reliable secretary.
With the last installment of the AMC hit just about to draw to a close, the actress who lends Dawn her characteristic spunk, Teyonah Parris, stopped by the HuffPost Live lounge. There, she talked about what it’s like as an African American woman breaking into Hollywood.
“You were one of the few people who walked the red carpet with natural hair,” the HuffPost Live hosts tells Teyonah. “You, obviously, have a team of people who will support and love you for that … but what's it like to deal with that in a place that doesn’t naturally value black people, African features, all that stuff?”
Teyonah admits that it hasn’t always been easy, saying she “not consciously” tried to mimic the non-natural standard she’d always seen growing up. But eventually, she had an “aha” moment where she realized her natural hair had the potential to be as beautiful as she’d always dreamed. What changed? Watch the video above to hear Teyonah’s story and why she burst into tears the first time she wore her natural hair outside.
