USA Cancels Necessary Roughness — Will You Miss It?

This is rough news for fans of a certain cable TV drama.

USA has canceled sports dramedy Necessary Roughness after three seasons, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The series had starred Callie Thorne as Danielle Santino, a divorcee who works as a therapist for a pro football team. John Stamos joined the cast in Season 3.

Necessary Roughness premiered in June 2011 and had wrapped up its third season in August 2013. The series premiere had logged 4.67 million viewers, but the Season 3 finale dipped to only 2.36 million sets of eyeballs.

"We are proud of this show and its writers, which had a unique ability to address topical subjects before they unfolded in real life on the sports pages," says USA in a statement. "We want to thank [creators] Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro, the incredible cast led by Golden Globe nominee Callie Thorne, and our partners at Sony Television."

Indeed, Callie was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Drama Series in 2012. She lost the award to Claire Danes for Homeland.

This has been a bad month for basic-cable drama series starring sexy lead actresses. Lifetime announced a few weeks ago that it has canceled The Client List starring Jennifer Love Hewitt.

So will you miss Necessary Roughness? Or are you like us, and do you wish that there would instead be a TV series based on the early '90s film Necessary Roughness, starring Scott Bakula, Rob Schneider, and Kathy Ireland? Now that we would tune in for.
