The season premiere of The Voice is just around the corner, and the coaches have been busy lining up their mentors. In a somewhat controversial move, Shakira has tapped Blake Shelton’s own wife, Miranda Lambert, as the mentor for her team. And Blake, himself, has enlisted the country skills of current it-group The Band Perry. Now comes news that Usher has secured the help of Grammy winner Jill Scott.
“That’s my secret weapon, incredible, as a writer, as a musician, as an actress, all those elements really help to prepare artists,” Usher said of Jill during an interview with Extra TV.
Fortunately for Usher, Jill says this was an offer she literally couldn’t refuse.
“When Usher calls, you take the call,” Jill gushed of the popular R&B/pop singer.
It certainly sounds like there is a lot of mutual admiration there, and Jill has the background to really help these aspiring singers. The singer-songwriter is also an actress and a poet, having made her film debut in Hounddog and Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married in 2007. She also secured the lead role in HBO/BBC’s The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency.
Being an actress as well as a singer will give Jill a very well-rounded approach to her mentoring –– much like that of Cher. And she’s got some wise words of wisdom for these hopefuls, too.
“Listen to your gut, follow your heart and it will lead you somewhere special,” Jill said when asked about her advice for the season six contestants.
The new season airs on February 24 and, based on what we know so far, it sounds like one to watch.
