Maksim Chmerkovskiy now has a Dancing With the Stars Mirror Ball trophy. Grandma, Mom, Dad, brother Valentin Chmerkovskiy, best friend Tony Dovolani, and all supporters of House Chmerkovskiy are thrilled for the longtime pro to win. But now his little bro is ready for his own plastic glory.
Maks started on DWTS in Season 2 but Val didn’t join us until Season 13. He’s already come close to winning, taking third with Kelly Monaco on All-Stars and second last spring with Zendaya. But he’s had to settle for sixth in the past two seasons. Val is happy for Maks to win Season 18, since he’s been waiting for his big moment for a long time, but he’s also prepared to get just as competitive.
"It's a very emotional moment,” Val told On the Red Carpet on Tuesday, after Maks’ big win. “The biggest reason is it means so much to him, whether he admits it or not. He's a big, tough guy — he tries to be at least. But the truth is, this does mean a lot to him. It's very important for me to see him find that closure in such an important chapter of his life. He can't continue to other things being bitter about something that he invested 10 years of his life in. For me it's amazing, for our family it's amazing to finally see him celebrate and not give him another excuse why it didn't happen, or this or that."
That may make it sound like Maks is leaving the show, which he’s hinted to himself, but Val said that’s not what he’s trying to say. "Hopefully there are many more trophies to come,” Val said, but added, “Now we can get competitive ... Now I want to win one! No more 'Hey, show respect to the elders.' Now that he's got his … You know, as the youngest sibling that grew up winning tournaments all the time and him guiding me through it, I've felt that before... I don't need that feeling. He's never felt that. He needs that feeling and I'm glad that he got it today, but now we can finally be even. And no more showing favoritism to Maks. My whole family shows favoritism to Maks. And now finally we can stop babying him."
Ha! Well, it’s on now. No more coddling the "big baby." He got his validation. It's time for Grandma Chmerkovskiy and company to back Team Val.
We know he’s just kidding around (at least in part) since these bros always put family first and back each other till the end. But it’s time to move on from the Maks storyline to the Val storyline. Or maybe the Anna, Sharna, Emma, Tristan, Witney, Sasha, Henry, Lindsay storyline, since Val isn’t the only pro who has yet to win a trophy. We’ll have to see who’s the hungriest for that win when the fall season starts. (Or Derek could just win again.) Good luck!
Do you think Season 19 will be Val’s season to win?
