‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 8 Spoilers: Everything We Know So Far
Here’s a quick summary of what we’ll be pondering all summer: Damon Salvatore and Enzo became mindless killing machines, Steroline reunited, Bonnie Bennett was saved but is now heartbroken, Matt Donovan left town, and Alaric Saltzman went back to Dallas.
What lies ahead for this bunch? Let’s examine:
Our next Big Bad is clouded in mystery.
We didn’t see much of the creature inside the dreaded vault, but we did see some, as Julie Plec calls them, “creepy ass monster hands” in the episode! As she tells TVLine, we’re waiting until Season 8 to find out what exactly this thing is.
Brian Young, who wrote the Season 7 finale, teased TV Guide about how TVD is venturing into CGI territory with this Big Bad and doing something “a little different.”
Can Denzo be saved?
With Damon and Enzo — or whatever is left of them, at least — was admiring their handiwork with bodies upon bodies hanging from meathooks in some warehouse, we’re wondering if this dynamic duo can be brought back to the light.
“What we really wanted to do was give Damon a chance to act on Bad Damon again, but do it in a way that we can always forgive him for,” Brian Young told TV Guide.
“Season 8 is going to be rough for Damon and Enzo because bad s—t is going on,” he continued. “But Stefan, always believing the best in his brother, believes Damon is still in there.”
Is there hope for Steroline?
Julie Plec told TVLine she hopes the two can enjoy a bit of happiness before bad things happen again but said Stefan is “really going to need her” going forward and she’s there for “moral support.”
Despite her family with Alaric, Brian Young tells TV Guide that Caroline and Stefan “really are meant for each other” but the development with Denzo was the beginning of the end for the couple’s “happy ending.”
How will Bonnie deal with tragedy?
Can Bonnie ever catch a break? She may have been stripped of her huntress curse, but she’s lost her BFF and boyfriend in one fell swoop.
Julie Plec tells TVLine the witch will be “paralyzed by this struggle” which is made even worse because she’s lost her magic, too.
But Brian Young has hope Bonnie will be able to handle it all, telling TV Guide, “Bonnie is strong and so her rallying and finding the strength and really pushing forward with it is going to be a delight to watch.”
Will Matt ever return?
Matt may have left Mystic Falls but that doesn’t mean it’s the last we’ve seen of Zach Roerig.
“Matt’s going to take some time. It was rough for him,” Brian Young told TV Guide, discussing how the character feels like he “doesn’t necessarily belong” these days.
“If and when he comes back in Season 8 — he’ll be back eventually — we’ll have to see what form that takes and what journey he’s gone on and how that’s changed him.”
Is Alaric still on the show?
Another important character, papa Alaric, fled the supernatural drama and went back to Dallas to raise his magic-siphoning twin daughters — but will he be back?
TVLine flat-out asked Julie Plec if Matt Davis will be back and she joked that he’s “stuck” on TVD as a series regular since he (unfortunately) wasn’t cast as Young Indiana Jones.
Don’t expect more Elena.
The Vampire Diaries Season 8 will return to The CW this fall.
