The year is coming to a close, and Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder has taken some time to reflect on it with his social media following. What did the handsome actor have to say about 2013, and the year ahead?

“Happy New Year from Tokyo! 2013 was truly magical.Truly. Lets make this one even better,” Ian shared on Instagram earlier today while standing on the other side of the world. The message came complete with a snapshot selfie of Ian’s gorgeous mug, holding up champagne in a toast to his social media followers.

In addition to reflecting back on 2013, Ian also outlined some hopes for 2014 in his Instagram caption: “In the Words of Allan Savory: ‘Lets make 2014 a Vintage year for humanity’ I'm so grateful for the support of Vampire Diaries and The Ian Somerhalder Foundation. I'm so truly grateful for all of the support but I need you help- pls pls PLEASE go to and donate TODAY- it's the last day of 2013 and we need it!!!Help us build this sanctuary and start these programs!”

If you hadn’t noticed, Ian is extremely passionate about his nonprofit, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation. The organization aims “to empower, educate and collaborate with people and projects to positively impact the planet and its creatures.” For his 35th birthday, he asked people to donate to the IS Foundation, rather than send presents. And, his social media often focuses on the importance of the organization and its ambitious goals more than anything going on in Ian’s personal life. What a guy!

The Vampire Diaries returns Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 8 p.m. on The CW.
