Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev’s split has taken many fans by surprise, but a source tells US Weekly that the breakup was “inevitable.”

The former couple met while working on The Vampire Diaries and went public with their romance in 2011. The show has been renewed for a fifth season, making some fans wonder if Ian and Nina will be uncomfortable around one another on set this July. But a source tells US the two plan to remain friends. “There was no mean spiritedness behind of [sic] either of their motives,” says another source.

Life & Style recently reported that Ian, 34, was ready to marry Nina, 24, but she wasn’t ready. “[Ian] was starting to talk marriage and she’s just getting started on her career,” a source revealed. “She loves him, and they still talk every day, but she is just not ready to make that huge commitment yet.”

US’s insider echoes the notion that their age difference of 10 years might be to blame, saying, “I think she decided she wanted to experience other things.”

Rumors that the couple had split have been following them since March. They met up in New York in early May, and it’s not clear whether the breakup, which was announced on May 9, was before or after this encounter.

It’s wonderful that the pair can still be friends after all they’ve been through. We hope they both find happiness — together, or apart.
