The season may be over, but we’re still reeling! With all the sexy times, murdery times, cases of mistaken identity, and the havoc wreaked by an emotion-free Elena (Nina Dobrev), it’s hard to feel anything other than shock, awe, and sadness that this season is done. That said, we’ve got a lot to digest. What better way to start than with a little ol’ round-up of the top five OMG moments of Season 4 of The Vampire Diaries! Don’t see your favorite moment here? Go ahead and share it in the comments.

1) To Sire, With Love

It doesn’t matter if you’re Team Stefan (Paul Wesley) or Team Damon (Ian Somerhalder).  (Those are fightin’ words, we know.) After so many will-they-or-won’t-they moments between Elena and the bad-boy brother, their hookup was inevitable. It was also shocking, and not just because of everything it meant for the dynamic between Stefan, Damon, and Elena. In one particularly steamy scene, we learned that Elena was sired to Damon, a rare but real occurrence among vampires.

Not only did this blow a hole into any theories that the two were destined for a problem-free happily ever after, but it also called into question everything about their potential for a long-term union. Elena swore up and down that she had true feelings for Damon, but he couldn’t shake his doubt. This, of course, made Elena’s decision at the end of the season all the more touching; it felt like Damon and Elena had earned a moment — or at least a second — of happiness. That said, it was still a gut-wrenching bummer to see Stefan driving off on his lonesome.

2) Jeremy Sees Dead People — Because He IS Dead People

Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and Elena have a tight connection, and not just because they grew up as brother and sister. With every other member of their family officially having made passage into the sweet hereafter, the importance of family reaches a whole new level. They worked through their stuff even when Jer the Vampire Hunter was driven by an all consuming need to stake Elena in the heart. It was traumatic, but we did see him shirtless a lot, which did not suck.

Having made it through the benign (the awkwardness of him dating her best friend) and the not-so-benign (you know, the aforementioned uncontrollable need to kill her), it was all the more gut-wrenching when Katherine (Nina Dobrev) killed Jeremy during the gang’s race to find the cure for vampirism. Not only was it sad to see Jeremy go (albeit it briefly) but the result sent Elena careening off into emotion-free land — which in turn led to many of our most OMG Moments. It was only fitting that Jeremy returned when Elena’s emotions did. Now the question we’re left to ponder this summer is, is he really here to stay and is Bonnie (Kat Graham) really gone for good?

3) Elena Does Not Give a D**n

While Elena’s tender heart and giving nature have attracted the two hunkiest guys on the planet and made her an empathetic main character, the baby vamp shutting down her emotions was thrilling. Seeing her play devious and conniving and wicked was a breath of OMG-worthy fresh air.

Whether it was rolling her eyes at Stefan, makes jibes at Damon for being in love with her, or battling Caroline (Candice Accola) in the middle of the woods, so many moments made us raise our eyebrows practically off of our heads. That and seeing her and Rebekah(Claire Holt) playing Thelma and Louise; it doesn’t get better than that, does it?

4) Oh, the Humanity!

Remember that time Katherine was finally driven nuts by envy and tried to kill Elena and, not having any other option, Elena force-fed her double the cure, making her human? We do too, because who could ever forget that happened?!

We did a lot of speculation about who would take the cure and what would happen to them as a result of doing so. In a way, once the deed was done, it became clear that it could be none other than Katherine who was stuck with the gift slash curse of being human. For a woman who was just last week seeking permanent, Silas-like immortality, this couldn’t be further from what she wanted for herself. But let’s be honest; she had it coming, and if taking the cure means her struggling with acne and having to go to the gym, we are all for it.

5) Haven’t I Seen You Before?

Silas, this season’s big baddie, spent most of the season hiding his face from view. This was disturbing if only because it is always disturbing to see Caroline torturing anyone, let alone Klaus. The immortal’s many different faces were the source of general panic and several twists in the plot this season, so when we finally saw his face and learned why he worked so hard to keep it hidden, the wait was totally worth it.

The look on poor, poor Stefan’s face as he realized that he and Silas were doppelgangers was one of pure shock and horror! Not as horrified as his expression once the safe hit the water but still. Think of the doppelganger hijinks to come next season!
