Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev were, are, and will be, two of our favorite people. Watching their characters’ on-again, off-again romance on the Vampire Diaries was made even more thrilling when we had their own real-life romance to speculate about. Now, although Damon and Elena seem headed for sunny, blue, romantic skies, Nina and Ian are no more.

While it’s hard to say what went wrong in a relationship unless you’re one of the people in it, looking on as an outsider can provide some-much needed perspective. Here are five signs things were going wrong for this former duo.

1. A lack of tweets

While Ian and Nina a both prolific tweeters, in the past few months they haven’t really had much contact on Twitter. It’s not like they were constantly retweeting each other before and sending each other “I <3 you” messages over Twitter, but their recent silence was pretty deafening.

2. Avoided Each Other At The Upfronts

Although the private duo had made no formal announcement about their relationship, Nina and Ian made sure to avoid each other at the CW’s annual programming Upfronts. Sources spotted a tearful Nina doing her best to dodge Ian. The eyes say it all.

3. No Public Appearances

Although as a couple they prefered to keep to themselves, Ian and Nina were not above the occasional public outing. For example, they attended several events over Super Bowl weekend together. In the months leading up to their breakup, they were often seen out and about in public separately, but not often together, and definitely not together at public events.

4. Separate Vacations

The death knell officially sounded when the two couples went on vacation... but not with each other. Rather than take a trip together (as they’ve often done in the past), Ian hopped a plane to China and Nina settled for the sunny beaches of Miami. They weren’t just mentally out of sync, they were geographically miles apart.

5. Telling Tweets

Passive aggressive tweeting — we all do it, even celebrities! Soon after the announcement of their breakup, Ian tweeted: “ A THOUGHT FOR TODAY: People change and forget to tell each other - Lillian Hellman, American Playwright (1905-1984).” Sometimes a tweet says a thousand words.
