Poor, poor Stefan (Paul Wesley). The Vampire Diaries Season 4 finale was not good to him — at all. In addition to losing the girl and having to say goodbye to his ghostly best friend (again), he found out that he’s Silas’ doppelgänger. Then he was stabbed, locked in a safe, and sent to the bottom of the quarry, where he will repeatedly drown until someone saves him. And you thought your life was rough.

All of this begs the question: How will the crew find Stefan? Not only is Silas in town looking exactly like him, but even if they realize he’s not Stefan, what would make them decide to check a safe at the bottom of the quarry? Vampires don’t exactly go for Sunday swims. The way we see it, there are a couple potential options for how this could play out:

Bonnie (Kat Graham) helps from the other side: In the TVD universe, the answer to almost any question is magic. Witches are the problem solvers. That’s just a fact. But with the amazing Bonnie gone, will she still be able to help? It’s certainly possible, what with Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) being able to communicate with her and all. So perhaps she will realize that her death meant Silas’s release and will be able to locate Stefan from the Other Side?

Other ghostly assistance: For some reason, it feels likely that someone from the Other Side will have to help the residents of Mystic Falls with this equation. Perhaps a ghostly Alaric (Matt Davis) or Lexi will show up and reveal Stefan’s current whereabouts? Lexi was the last person to see him, so at least she knows where he was headed, and we’re willing to bet Silas won’t be able to fool her. (Or maybe we just really, really want more Alaric/Lexi cameos.)

Silas slips up: Odds are that Silas is going to do something at some point that clues either Elena (Nina Dobrev), Damon (Ian Somerhalder), or Caroline (Candice Accola) to the fact that he’s not actually Stefan. Then again, he’s psychic, so would it even matter? And if they figured it out, what would lead them to the quarry? Well, we know that Damon saw Stefan loading up the car to dump Silas, so it shouldn’t be hard to figure out that Silas being alive isn’t good for the baby bro. Maybe we’re underestimating the detective skills of our favorite vamps. Perhaps they will realize that searching the quarry is a good place to start?

Happy accident: Do people fish in Mystic Falls? Scuba dive? We are positive stranger things have happened in the town. Perhaps the final clue to Stefan’s whereabouts will be nothing but a happy accident. Well, it will be happy until Stefan emerges and is ready for some revenge. Silas’s doppelgänger will be on the loose. (We hope!)
