The jaw-dropping surprise that Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) is pregnant with Klaus’s (Joseph Morgan) baby will carry over onto The Originals from The Vampire Diaries. During the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con, reporters were dying to ask all about the hybrid’s baby.

How did you feel when you found out that Hayley was going to have a baby?

Phoebe Tonkin: It was crazy, because I had known about this pilot for a really long time when I had first gotten on to Vampire Diaries and so did Joseph. So we would spend lunchtime being like, “What if this happens?” trying to think up ideas. And Julie was just like, “I am not telling you guys anything! Stop asking for spoilers!” So I had all these ideas in my head of what the pilot could be, what the show could be, and so when I read that I was like, you got me. I did not think of that. But it’s really cool, and we didn’t even read the pilot when we shot the scene where the baby was conceived. So to then go, oh wow, that makes sense why that happened and why I’m here. It’s going to be really cool, especially for me as a character. It’s such a cool added element within this whole thing and the stakes are so much higher. It’s threatening the life of a child.

Now that Hayley is in New Orleans, is she finding anything out about her family and their past?

A: She will, yes. They are all in New Orleans and Hayley is still trying, especially now that she has a child, she wants to know about her mother and where she came from. So yeah, she’s definitely going to try finding out more about her family now that she is in New Orleans.

How does your relationship with Klaus change now that you are carrying his baby?

I feel it’s really interesting because Klaus and Hayley always had chemistry and an attraction, but it wasn’t romantic. So now Klaus probably resents Hayley a little bit because he’s a man and he’s pissed off and he’s been put in this position and whatever, but I think it’s going to be really nice to see them challenge each other and both support and protect each other as the series goes on.

How do you think Hayley will fit in with the rest of the Originals?

Well Hayley hasn’t met Rebekah (Claire Holt) yet, but she’s about to. Her and I are really excited, because for seven months we were like, Julie can we please have a scene together? But we definitely get to meet each other and Rebekah is Auntie Rebekah now, essentially, so hopefully they can bond.

She’s got a very contentious relationship with her brother, so do you think you two will become allies?

Yeah I think it’s going to be really interesting. We don’t know enough but I think it’s going to be really cool to have Rebekah there; she’s so fierce and strong. They’re all very strong characters, so there’s going to be a lot of butting heads.

What are you looking forward to seeing in terms of fan reaction?

Well I said to Julie today, what’s really cool — and I know I always joke about it because obviously a lot people that were not so happy about Klaus and Hayley which I emphasize was not the magic; I’m all for the Caroline Forbes. I think what’s really cool to kind of start with a character and because of the challenge of trying to persuade the fans to really root for her. At the moment, there are people on the edge, there are people that are flat out “No Hayley,” so we’re hoping to kind of prove to the fans that they can empathize with this young girl who has been put in this very weird situation that’s going to be really hard for her.

Julie is like, this is the challenge I’ve ever written to convince people to fall in love with a character that there are some very strong feelings about online. But I think also having a show, there’s going to be more time to explore Hayley’s past and there’s a lot that Julie is telling me and we’re slowly figuring out in the series where Hayley has come from. You know she was orphaned when she was 11 or 12; we don’t know what happened to her parents and then she was in and out of foster care as a teenager and then was backpacking around the world trying to find out more about her biological parents. So Hayley has seen a lot and she’s experienced a lot, and I think a lot of those things have driven her to make some decisions that she has recently. I think when the fans hear more about her past, maybe they will understand some of the things she’s done recently.
