That noise you just heard was the sound of a bajillion Fifty Shades of Grey fans' hearts breaking simultaneously.
Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L. James announced today that Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam will play the coveted role of Christian Grey in the upcoming film adaptation. That means that numerous fan favorites, including The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder, are out of luck.
But novelist Bret Easton Ellis is now claiming that Ian was never really considered by E.L. or the film's producers. Here's what Bret tweeted on September 2:
Wow! We're not sure if we're more shocked that Rob Pattinson apparently came this close to nabbing the role, or that Ian was never a frontrunner.
And we don't really know what to make of this news. Did E.L. not think Ian fit the character well enough? Or was he just not considered a big enough star for the part? Maybe E.L. wanted someone beefier than Ian, given how muscular Charlie is.
However, as of a Daily Mail poll conducted earlier this summer, Ian was the top choice of the book's readers. He was followed in the poll by Henry Cavill, Ryan Gosling, and Michael Fassbender. Listen to the people, E.L.!
Sadly, the closest Ian will come to playing Christian is when he stars in the version that plays over and over in our heads.
