Evidently the “h” in Ph.D stands for hot because Rick Cosnett, who will play Dr. Wes Maxfield in The Vampire Diaries Season 5, is all kinds of dreamy. In a new interview with TV Fanatic, the Aussie actor (who sadly won’t be making use of his accent on the show) dropped a few hints about what we can expect from the mysterious and menacing new professor at Whitmore College.

Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Caroline’s (Candice Accola) new biology teacher is tough. Rick says his character is neither kind nor helpful. “He takes no prisoners in his class,” he explains. “You will fail if you don’t work hard.” But failing may be the least of the vampire co-eds’ worries. Professor Maxfield is deep into the world of bloodsuckers.

“It’s safe to say that he might know more than anyone else, because he’s very intelligent and he’s actually researched everything,” says Rick. “He knows a lot of stuff.”

He hinted that the girls might be safe for a while, thanks to their daylight rings but he teased that Elena and Caroline “have a bit of a run-in with him.”

It sounds like Damon (Ian Somerhalder) might show up on campus, since Rick says he’s worked with Ian — but that could harm, rather than help, the college students. If you remember from an earlier spoiler, this doctor knows all of the elder Salvatore’s secrets…
