Come this October, The CW will launch The Originals, the New Orleans-based The Vampire Diaries spin-off focusing on the Mikaelson family. You mean we get to watch Klaus, Rebekah, and Elijah all the time? We are so ready to love The Originals! But we do have a few suggestions. Here are three things we want to see for Klaus’ character now that he is filling a more focal role.

Make him someone we can root for

We love Klaus, but his character can be impossible to root for. We don’t want his character to turn from villain to hero overnight, but it’s going to be hard to continue to watch a show that has such an amoral character at its center (whatever, Breaking Bad). A story about how someone works to atone for his sins? That we can get on board with as long as it’s a smooth and convincing transition.

Mikaelson family dinners

It’s obvious to anyone who knows Klaus that his relationship with his family is an important one. If The Originals is going to succeed as a show — and Klaus as a character — then it needs to keep the Mikaelson family dynamics front and center. It is what made these characters so compelling on TVD, and what can give The Originals emotional resonance from the get-go. Klaus’ (sometimes twisted) love for his family, even when committing the most grievous of actions, was always what made him the most human.

Klaroline hope

We just can’t help ourselves! Just because Klaus and Caroline will be on different shows with different love interests, doesn’t mean they can’t give one another a shout-out once in awhile. In the TVD Season 4 finale, Klaus told Caroline that he intends to be her last love, and we’re 100 percent on board with that plan. We’re fine if the two can’t be together now, but we still want Klaus to drop a Caroline reference every now and again. A few Caroline-centric works of art wouldn’t go amiss either.
