Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries marks some big changes for Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev). Our little vampire is all grown up and starting college! Also, she’s finally together for real with Damon after a season of them waffling under the sire bond excuse. What do we want to see for Elena in the upcoming season? Read on to find out!

More Katherine and Elena interaction

It’s probably hell to film, but it sure is fun to watch when Katherine and Elena go head-to-head. These doppelgangers have never gotten along, and rightly so on Elena’s part. Katherine has continuously killed the people Elena loves most. Most recently, she served Jeremy up to Silas on a silver platter in what was perhaps the most heartbreaking (albeit temporary) death in TVD history. Now that Katherine is human and seemingly hanging around Mystic Falls, we’re interested to see how the Katherine/Elena relationship has changed. Has humanity made Katherine any kinder and could Elena ever forgive Katherine for the truly terrible things she has done? We yearn to find out!

An academic interest

After four season of hanging with Elena, we’re still not really sure what the girl likes to do with her free time besides make out with Salvatores. Elena’s enrollment in Whitmore college seems like the perfect time to find out! We’re eager to see Elena embrace an academic interest, even if we have no idea what it might be (Creative writing, perhaps? She does have plenty of dramatic experience to draw from, and she used to really like writing in that journal.) Whatever she chooses, we’re eager to see Elena doing something separate from her supernatural activities. After all, eternity is a long time to live without a hobby. Klaus has his art. Stefan has his brooding. What does Elena have?

Balance

After spending a good part of last season without her emotions, we’re eager to see who Elena really is as a vampire now that she’s dealt with most (okay, some) of her unresolved issues and flicked the old emotions switch back on. As terrible as she was, Emotionless Elena was actually a lot of fun, so we hope to see Elena 2.0 display some of the edginess we saw in her. On the other hand, Elena wouldn’t be Elena without the super-empathy she seems to possess. We hope Season 5 of TVD finds a way to balance these two versions of Elena into a cool, caring Elena.
