Though Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries will find Elena (Nina Dobrev) happily in the arms of Damon (Ian Somerhalder), that doesn’t mean her love for Stefan (Paul Wesley) is over. Given Nina’s recent comments on the “cosmic connection” Elena shares with Stefan, we couldn’t help but speculate on if Elena’s feelings for Stefan will resurface before the season is out. Here are three reasons why we totally think it’s going to happen!

Stefan is sad.

After spending a summer or so getting all pruny at the bottom of a quarry, we’re guessing Stefan is going to have a seriously hard time adjusting to life back on dry land. And, if there’s anything we know about Elena, it’s that empathy is more or less her super power. If vampirism heightens one’s emotions, then we can only imagine how bad Elena is going to feel about Stefan having had the worst summer ever (which, as if repeatedly drowning wasn’t enough, apparently also involved painful hallucinations). Now, sympathy does not a romance make, but it will give Elena a reason to hang around Stefan more than she probably would have had he spent the summer sipping lattes in Portland like originally semi-planned. Beware, Elena! Having heart-to-hearts with a recent ex often leads to more…

The epic love triangle.

As cool as the hybrids, curses, and plot twists can be, TVD is a character-driven show based around the love triangle between Elena, Stefan, and Damon. There are often lulls in the battle for Elena’s heart, but it is ongoing. We can’t imagine TVD giving up on this central theme, which means Elena eventually has to get back together with Stefan, right? We don’t think the matter of Elena’s heart will be totally settled until the series ends. Until then, her heart is fair game. Damon may have it for now and Delena may be happy for most of the season but we doubt that it will stay that way. Probably because…

Damon will screw up.

Don’t get us wrong, we love Damon’s unpredictability and spur-of-the-moment bad decisions, but that’s as giddy viewers, not as characters who have to deal with the fall out. Deep down, we think Damon has a good heart (and we know Elena thinks so, too), but that doesn’t diminish his talent for making epically poor choices (that’s his super power). Recently, Damon has stayed on the straight-and-narrow, but it’s only a matter of time before he screws it up because this is one of the three great realities of TVD: Stefan will have awesome, gravity-defying hair; Elena will wear Henleys; and Damon will sabotage his own happiness.

And, when Damon screws up, guess which of his family members will be there to pick up the pieces, prompting some of those butterfly-inducing feelings we’ve alluded to before? We don’t blame Elena. It’s like choosing between chocolate and coffee if you’re in proximity to either for any extended amount of time, you’re probably going to devour it.
