Sometimes, we’re so excited to see The Vampire Diaries’ Mikaelson family with their very own spin-off show, we forget that there are brand new characters on The Originals to obsess about - namely, vampire Marcel. Klaus’ ex-protege and the self-proclaimed King of the French Quarter, Marcel has some serious charisma, and we can’t wait to learn more about him. The actor behind the role, Charles Michael Davis, recently sat down with TV Fanatic to tease his character’s Season 1 developments. What did he reveal about Marcel’s past, present, and future?
We know from the TVD backdoor pilot that Marcel was turned by Klaus more than a century ago, raising him from “pitiful street orphan” status to immortal vampire. But does Marcel have any long-lost family hiding in the woodwork?
“He’s orphaned,” said Charles. “You find out very soon a little bit if his backstory. You see where he comes from. You learn about his mother and father, and any extended family I guess is just up in the air.” As for the relationship with his vamp creator (i.e. Klaus), Charles said, “There’s going to be smooth patches and there’s going to be rough patches.” Story of Klaus’ immortal life.
Marcel and Elijah interaction
Though we got plenty of Klaus/Marcel interaction in the TVD backdoor pilot, we have yet to learn about the dynamic between Marcel and the others Mikaelsons. It sounds like that will change in The Originals pilot, which is told through Elijah’s point-of-view. Charles said “maybe you’ll see [Elijah] interacting with certain characters. Maybe Marcel.” If the pilot is from Elijah’s POV, and Marcel is one of The Originals’ chief protagonists, we’d say it’s a good bet we’ll get at least one Marcel/Elijah convo to dissect.
Romance with Rebekah?
As for our other favorite Mikaelson, Rebekah, it seems that she and Marcel may share some sort of tumultuous romantic past. Whatever their history, Charles said, “That’s another thing that we’ll go into fairly quickly, and you’ll get the backstory - if there is any backstory.” Oh, Charles, there’s always a backstory.
Charles was equally evasive when it came to the question of if he’s filmed any love scenes yet for The Originals. The actor looked at someone off camera (most likely a producer or writer) and asked if he was allowed to say anything. He eventually settled on the answer: “I can honestly say that I can’t answer that.” Sounds like an affirmation by avoidance to us. Why waffle about answering a question if the answer is no?
