Here's a peek at Season 5 of The Vampire Diaries in the form of a fiery new promo poster, and boy does it look intense. What does the dramatic imagery, cast placement, and color motif tell us about the upcoming season? We speculate below!
“Blood lines are torched. Battle lines are drawn,” taglines the promo poster that has the main cast dressed in black (save for Elena, who is looking sultry in a red, see-through skirt). Flaming torches dot the woodsy, water-side landscape, and the whole gang is represented.
The poster includes everyone you’d expect - Damon, Stefan, Elena, Caroline, Matt, Jeremy, Bonnie, and Tyler - but the interesting thing is that “Stefan” really seems to be doppelganger Silas. He has his hand on the surface of the water, seemingly keeping his “shadow self” (i.e. the real Stefan) trapped beneath the surface with the fire that streams from his hand. Is Silas really able to produce fire or is this just dramatic imagery for the poster?
Another important mention is that Nina Dobrev is on the poster twice — once, as vampire protagonist Elena, and once as human-again Katherine. Hopefully, this means we’ll be getting to see lots of Katherine in Season 5!
Special shout-out to Bonnie, who is barely visible at the very back of the shot, but looking like a total badass in a wispy black dress. The tulle of her dress is literally providing a veil between her ghosty self and the rest of the characters. (Though, Jeremy is totally crouching down next to her in a protective position. We can already tell these two are going to break our hearts this season.)
Front and center
Perhaps what is most unexpected about this promo poster is Matt’s prominent location. Our favorite blond-haired, blue-eyed busboy is located front and center, hopefully hinting at a prominent role in the upcoming season. With his shirt unbuttoned and open, Matt is arguably showing the most skin in the shot (okay, fine, Elena is not wearing a shirt — but she does have a lot of hair to cover up). Is this some sort of reference to Matt’s newfound sexual boldness? (Word on the street is that Matt and Rebekah shared a threesome with newcomer Olga in Amsterdam.) Or does it have to do with that fact that he is the only non-supernatural amongst the group? (Well, we suppose Katherine is technically human now, but having lived a few hundred years has gotta put you in a separate category, right?)
