The relationship between Caroline (Candice Accola) and Tyler (Michael Trevino) was super complicated in Season 4, what with sire bonds and the fact that Klaus threatened to kill Tyler if he dared return to Mystic Falls. Now that Tyler has broken his sire bond and Klaus has lifted his No Tyler Allowed mandate, it should be smooth sailing for these two lovebirds in Season 5, right? As if! There’s no such thing on The Vampire Diaries.

College concerns

One of the biggest possible threats to the Forwood relationship in Season 5 is the fact that Caroline will be away at college, meeting new people, exploring new ideas, and generally growing as a person (technically, Tyler is supposed to be attending Whitmore College, as well, but we’ll believe it when we see it). Many a high school relationship supernatural or otherwise has fallen apart when college happens. These two are at a crossroads in their relationship, made more distinct by the fact that they have spent relatively little time apart in the last few months as Tyler was exiled from Mystic Falls. We’re not these two will definitely grown apart, but it could totally happen. After all, these two have a lot working against them. No, not a dangerous power-hungry hybrid in love with Caroline, but something far more subtle and mundane: geographic and social distance.

New love interest

Step one: isolate college freshman from high school boyfriend/girlfriend. Step two: introduce cute, new love interest who lives down the hall and/or has the same classes. Step three: get drunk at college party. This recipe is one of the most popular recipes for disaster in the Bad Decisions College Cookbook, and unfortunately for Caroline we don’t think vampire Barbies are immune. Bad news, Forwood fans: Caroline has a fancy new Whitmore College love interest named Jesse. How close will Caroline grow to Jesse in Tyler’s absence? Will she make an in-the-moment decision (read: vodka-fueled) that she will live to regret? We’d say the chances are 50/50.

Love conquers all

On the other hand, Caroline and Tyler have been through so much together. They understand more about one another and their respective struggles to adapt to a supernatural existence than anyone else could possibly hope to. Their connection isn’t something we see either of them trading in or giving up on without a considerable, game-changing event. After all, they have been working so hard and for so long to be together. We can’t imagine them giving up their love without a fight.
