Who is covering up the vampire-committed murders on the Whitmore College campus? In tonight’s episode of The Vampire Diaries (“True Lies”), we’ll meet a likely candidate in new character Dr. Wes Maxfield (Rick Cosnett). The good doctor is Caroline and Elena’s brilliant young microbiology professor, and he is hiding “a dark and dangerous secret,” according to TVGuide.com. What else did Rick Cosnett have to tell the online magazine about his clever new character…?

"He can be a jerk," Rick said. "There's a side to him that will be revealed which is not as nice as we'd all like." As in, the original Founders Council not-nice. It sounds like Caroline and Elena will be onto their professor from the get-go, and they’re not the only ones suspicious of Dr. Wes. Remember Jesse, the cute college guy who invited Caroline and Elena to the frat party where their roomie Megan was murdered? Well, he “shares some intriguing information” about Dr. Wes with Elena and Caroline. The investigation goes from there...

"Elena and Caroline are coming into my world, and in bits and pieces, they're starting to discover parts of Dr. Maxfield," Rick said. "He shows a lot about the human condition and how things go wrong and the dichotomy between good and evil." Yikes! This Dr. Wes sounds dangerous. Our favorite vamp co-eds better be careful!

TVGuide.com also shared an exclusive photo of Caroline and Elena (or possibly Katherine) confronting Dr. Wes (looking devilishly handsome in a sweater vest and lab coat). Actually, the Nina Dobrev character totally seems like Katherine with her curled locks and “I will rip your neck out” glare (seriously, don’t turn your back on her), but why would she be hanging with Caroline at Whitmore?

What do you think Dr. Wes is up to? And why might Katherine be with Caroline? Share your theories in the comments below!
