In last week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries (Season 5, Episode 2, “True Lies”), we met Whitmore College professor Dr. Wes Maxfield (Rick Cosnett), and our Super Secret Dark Side Radar went off. What is Dr. Wes hiding? We speculate below.
An anti-vampire league
Is it just us, or does everyone at Whitmore seem to have a connection to Elena’s father? At the end of last week’s ep, Dr. Wes mentioned Grayson Gilbert. Given that Grayson was an active member of the Founder’s Council and more-or-less made it his life mission to take out any and all vampires, this probably isn’t a fun connection for Elena to explore. In fact, the most likely explanation to the Whitmore/Grayson connection probably has something to do with an anti-vamp league Grayson was a part of and/or created — that is, in addition to the Founders Council. They even seem to have some of the same tricks. Dr. Wes’ changing the autopsy report of Megan’s slaughter-by-vampire is right out of the Founder Council, Circa Season 1 Playbook.
A pro-vampire league
Given that Dr. Wes seemed interested in getting to know Elena because she is Grayson’s daughter, it doesn’t seem likely that the good doctors were working at cross purposes — but you never know. Is Dr. Wes part of some sort of pro-vampire league, perhaps developing vamps or other supernatural creatures in his laboratory? That would also explain why he wanted to cover up Megan’s death, i.e. so their research wasn’t exposed. It also might explain his interest in Elena. If he knows she is a vampire, might he need her for his research. Run, Elena!
He is a vampire
It’s not exactly an original twist at this point, but we have to consider the possibility that every new character could be a vamp. We’re not sure how this would feed into a larger plot, but it would certainly be interesting if Dr. Wes were killing off his students. Could he have been the one to take out Megan? If so, what is his interest with Elena? Does he think she might be another victim, or does he suspect that as Grayson Gilbert’s daughter, she is carrying on the anti-vampire tradition and he aims to take her out. We kind of hope it is the latter because that would be ironic and lead to a somewhat comical Dr. Wes revelation. Basically, we could stand to see this character get knocked down a few notches.
