When Season 5 of Vampire Diaries began, we were introduced to Jesse (guest star Kendrick Sampson), an upperclassman at Whitmore College who takes an extreme liking to Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola). In last night’s episode, “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) got pretty close to Jesse as well — and by close we mean he took a nice chunk out of his neck.

We were on the edge of our seat when the three characters met up at the party in the woods, and when Caroline had to compel Jesse to go hide until she got rid of Stefan — or should we say The Ripper? — we knew things were going to go downhill pretty quickly. As soon as Caroline turned her back, Stefan was off on his merry way to feed off Caroline’s potential flame’s neck.

Caroline seemingly got there in time, but it didn’t do any good. Stefan still took a large amount of blood from Jesse and he looked rather dead lying there on the ground.

At the end of the episode, when we were in Dr. Wes Maxfield’s (guest star Rick Cosnett) laboratory, we found out that there was vampire blood in Jesse’s body and the creepy microbiology professor realized that Jesse was one short step away from becoming a vampire, so he gave him some sort of liquid in a syringe and seemingly killed the college student.

We’re not 100 percent sure that Jesse is a vampire, but this is The Vampire Diaries we’re talking about…
