Things aren’t looking as romantically wonderful as they once did for Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) and Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) on The Vampire Diaries. Elena is dealing with the death of her best friend, Damon is making deals with homicidal immortals, and a 2,000-year-old witch has prophesied the eventual romantic reunion of Elena and Stefan. Should Delena call it quits?

Yes, this will only end in misery.

We’ve really enjoyed seeing Damon and Elena together this season on TVD, especially after decades of Damon getting passed over by love for his younger brother. But, we can see the logic of throwing in the towel before things get bad. Watching Elena flirt with amnesiac Stefan last week reminded us of the chemistry Stelena shares and had us running Tessa’s warning to Damon that the doppelgangers will always find one another on repeat in our heads. It made for some awkward television viewing.

It also made us kind of frustrated with Elena. We know she’s still friends with Stefan and wants to be there for him, but couldn’t she have enacted her bids to stir Stefan’s memory with a little less destiny-eye? If Damon is set to get his heart broken over this, then we’d rather Elena figure out what she wants now, rather than massively break all of our hearts further down the road.

No, they can beat destiny!

On the other hand, maybe we should give Elena a little more credit. After all, she says she wants to be with Damon and she did stop Stefan from kissing her because she is with his brother. And, as far as Tessa’s prophecy goes, we felt a lot better after hearing Damon’s pep talk about how he is not going to let destiny tell him who he can and cannot love. Plus, who doesn’t love a good underdog story?

As far as obstacles go, the universe’s will (whatever that means) is a pretty big one, and watching Delena overcome that to be together would be kind of epicly awesome. Stelena had their own share of setbacks during their love affair, why shouldn’t Delena? It doesn’t mean they can’t work things out, and it doesn’t mean that, this time, Damon won’t be the brother who finally gets the girl.

Do you think Delena should break up? Why or why not? Sound off in the comments below!
