If The Vampire Diaries Season 5 villain Silas had one redeeming quality, it was his enduring love for Amara, a.k.a. his 2,000-year-old girlfriend. Which is why Amara’s stabbing of Silas in tonight’s episode — Season 5, Episode 6 (“Handle With Care”) — was kind of tragic. But, what can we say? Karma’s a bitch.
Back in Ancient Greece, Tessa told Silas that he had fed Amara the cure and ripped out her heart, but it turns out she has been lying for the last 2,000 years. As there is only one cure and Tessa wanted it for Silas, she kept Amara immortal. In fact, Amara’s immortality made her the perfect anchor for Tessa’s spell that created the Other Side, a.k.a. a kind of purgatory for supernatural creatures. Any witch, vampire, or werewolf who dies will spend eternity there until the anchor is destroyed and they can pass over for good.
Where did Silas and Amara’s epic romance go wrong? Well, it turns out desiccating in a crate for 2,000 years makes someone really want to die. Amara woke up from her statuesque slumber, heard Silas had the cure for immortality in his veins, and went straight for his blood. We were really starting to like Silas’s judgy warlock ways and his opening-of-curtains with magic, so we’re kind of bummed about Amara’s shard of glass to his jugular. R.I.P., Silas. (We think? No one ever stays dead on this show…)
