With the doppelganger drama officially behind us (R.I.P. Silas, Amara, and Tessa), we can finally move onto new tragedies on The Vampire Diaries — and the Augustine Vampire plot has officially heated up, thanks to Episode 9 ("The Cell"). With Elena (Nina Dobrev) in the hands of the evil Dr. Wes Maxfield (Rick Cosnett) — check out this photo of Elena on his lab — the Salvatore bros are going to have to team up to get her back in the sure-to-be-epic mid-season finale!

Dr. Maxfield is going to let out his “secret weapon” (which we’re pretty sure is Enzo, who is strapped down to the lab table beside Elena) when Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) confront Aaron (Shaun Sipos) for help finding Elena. After seeing the promo for the episode, Stefan is threatening Aaron's life in order to get Elena back, but Dr. Wes is able to threaten right back.

Now that we know a little more about Enzo, we can see why he is a “tortured figure from Damon’s past" — and we think Damon is going to be surprised to find his old friend still alive and kicking after leaving him in that fire back in the 50s. Damon is going to have to "deal with a part of his past he thought was gone forever.”

And just to make this episode even more about Dr. Maxfield, the dastardly professor is going to confess to Elena all the dark secrets of Whitmore College and what his ultimate goal is (which we think might involve Elena’s father, Grayson). Check out the synopsis below:

“Damon (Ian Somerhalder) realizes Elena (Nina Dobrev) is in danger and enlists Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) help to find her.  The brothers pay a visit to Aaron (guest star Shaun Sipos), and Damon shocks Stefan by revealing his first-hand knowledge of Aaron’s family.  In an attempt to stop Damon, Dr. Wes (guest star Rick Cosnett) unleashes his secret weapon, forcing Damon to deal with a part of his past he thought was gone forever, as well as the consequences of his decades-long plan for revenge.  Meanwhile, Elena is horrified by Dr. Wes’ confessions about the dark history of Whitmore College and his own ultimate goal.  Finally, a frantic Katherine (Nina Dobrev) turns to Matt (Zach Roerig) for help, until she realizes that Nadia (guest star Olga Fonda) may be the one who can solve her problem.”
