The Vampire Diaries is a show that asks its viewers to suspend disbelief when it comes to vampires, werewolves, ghosts, and hybrids — and we happily do so! But that doesn’t mean there aren’t things about the show that irk us with their irrationality. What were the biggest logic fails in Season 5, Episode 8 (“Dead Man on Campus”)?

Dorm party — with jello shots?

OK, maybe maybe you’d be able to get away with a party like this inside a dorm room, but openly passing out jello shots to college freshmen in a dorm common area? Yeah, right. We suppose Elena and Caroline could compel residential life staff to get away with this, but it would have had to be a pretty epic compel-fest. (Side note: we are glad that Bonnie pointed out the ridiculousness of both the size of her dorm room and the fireplace to her mother. Reality point, TVD!)

Damon’s jogged memory

Has Damon not heard the words “Augustine society” yet? Because we feel liked the TVD gang has been throwing them around for the past few episodes. We kind of thought someone had/would have mentioned it to him before this episode. Especially considering Elena has been all about figuring these peeps out. We liked the reveal that Damon is a former Augustine vamp, but we can’t believe it wouldn’t have come up already.

Shorts city!

We’re never sure at what rate time passes on TVD and we know Virginia is relatively warm, but how are all of these characters still in shorts and sundresses? It’s like the only wardrobe Caroline, Elena, and Bonnie brought to college Bonnie’s shorts are especially short this episode. Do vampires get cold? Maybe not.

Classes, shmlasses

We usually give TVD free pass on the characters lack of actual studying and class-going, but it seemed particularly silly that Jeremy was just bee-bopping between Mystic Falls and Whitmore College with nothing better to do midday than hang out with his girlfriend. We know he had a three-day suspension, but that has to have passed already. Is he just openly truant now? Though, we kind of enjoyed the meta-level of the joke about how Bonnie’s “registering for classes” was really sexy time with Jeremy. It’s like even the characters in the show know how ridiculous the thought of any one of them actually attending class is.
