The return of The Vampire Diaries on Thursday will also mark the introduction of a new character, Enzo (Michael Malarkey). What will Enzo’s role be in Season 5, Episode 9 (“The Cell”) and beyond? And with which TVD character does he share an intense history? Read on to find out all about Enzo!

He is someone from Damon’s past

According to Deadline’s initial announcement of his character, Enzo is “a charismatic but tortured figure from Damon’s past who arrives in Mystic Falls desperate to reconnect with his old friend.” How and when did Enzo know Damon? Judging by Damon’s recent reveal that he was an Augustine vampire back in 1953, we’re guessing the Enzo/Damon friendship originated sometime around then. In the promo pics for “The Cell,” we see Damon and Enzo hanging out behind bars. We’re guessing these two became pretty close while they were fellow prisoners/lab rats of the Augustine Society, but how did they leave things?

He seems to still be an Augustine vampire

While Damon had to have escaped the Augustine Society’s clutches sometime before the 1970s (though, presumably, before that), we don’t have any evidence so far that Enzo ever did. In fact, this promo picture of Enzo and Elena strapped down to neighboring medical exam tables suggests he is still an Augustine vampire. Did Damon leave Enzo behind when he broke out? Conversely, did Enzo choose to stay, perhaps hoping to be cured of his vampirism? This is one flashback sequence we’re dying to see.

He will be sticking around for a while

Whatever Enzo’s past connection to Damon, it seems that the Augustine vamp will be a part of Damon’s future. According to Deadline, Enzo is a “major, recurring character,” which suggests he will be in multiple episodes. With Tessa and Silas’ departures, we do have an opening for a Season 5 villain. Might Enzo be the next Big Bad?

What role do you think Enzo will play in Season 5? And what happened between he and Damon all those years ago? Sound off in the comments below!
