The Vampire Diaries knows how to deliver a midseason finale, and it sounds like Season 5 will be no different. What did Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore) tell TV Guide about the climactic episode?

"This episode is beautifully haunting," Ian said about Season 5, Episode 10 (“Fifty Shades of Grayson”), set to air December 12. The episode will be our last of the year before TVD returns on January 23 with the 100th episode.

Haunting, eh? It sounds like Episode 10 will be delving into both Damon and Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) troubled pasts. According to the episode synopsis, “In an attempt to stop Damon, Dr. Wes unleashes his secret weapon, forcing Damon to deal with a part of his past he thought was gone forever, as well as the consequences of his decades-long plan for revenge.” Could Damon finally come face-to-face with Enzo, the vamp he served torture time with as an Augustine vamp in 1953? We know that Enzo will be in tonight’s episode (Season 5, Episode 9: “The Cell”), but perhaps only in flashback form. And what is this we hear of a “decades-long plan for revenge”? Sounds like the 160-year-old vamp has a lot going on in the midseason finale.

As for Elena’s turn in the haunting department, we’ve been intrigued by the title of the episode — “Fifty Shades of Grayson” — since its announcement. Will details of her father’s involvement in the Augustine Society come to light in Episode 10? We’re dying to know how the Gilbert patriarch was involved with the super secret vampire-hating society, but we’d imagine the deets might be a bit more painful for his now-vamp daughter to hear...

How do you think the episode will be “beautifully haunting”? And what was Damon’s “decades-long plan for revenge” all about? Sound off in the comments below!

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursday nights at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
