The 100th episode of The Vampire Diaries (Season 5, Episode 11: “500 Years of Solitude”) is right around the corner, set to air January 23. This gives us just enough time to think about exactly what we want from the important ep. Here are five things we want to see in the 100th episode.

A Balance of New Plot and Nostalgia

The 100th episode has a lot to do: it has to recognize where the show has come from i.e. the previous 99 episodes as well as where it’s going. For a lesser show, this might seem an impossible task, but we have faith that TVD can pull it off especially since Season 5 already has a nostalgic vibe going for it. Executive producer Julie Plec has called the ep “a nice trip down memory lane.” We’re more than cool with that as long as backwards is not the only way we’re walking.

Returning Faces Given Their Due

We were really excited to hear the news that there will be many familiar faces returning for the big 1-0-0, but we hope the episode uses them well, and not in a gimmicky or inconsequential manner. TVD pulled this off in Season 3, Episode 7 (“Ghost World”) when the veil to the Other Side was dropped and people the characters (and we) loved came back to make some sort of peace (or not) with the people they left behind. It was structured, sentimental, and affecting. We hope the 100th ep can do the same thing whether we’re talking ghosts, flashbacks, or full-on resurrections for our beloved former TVDers.

An Unpredictable Plot Twist (Or Two)

TVD is known for its crazy and unpredictable plot twists and an important episode of this show wouldn’t feel quite right without one or two. Some of the Season 5 twists and turns haven’t been very effective (we’re looking at you, Matt’s Eastern European possession), so we hope TVD is on for this all-important episode.

A Real Death

We hate to say it, but we kinda, sorta hope someone dies (for real) in this episode. TVD is a show that flirts with death, but rarely ever truly kills someone off in the sense that they are gone from these characters’ lives and from the very show itself. This is a show about dealing with death, life, and everything in-between. It might feel odd if that theme isn’t addressed in a very real way in this statement episode. If this is going to be the serious, memorable episode we think it’s trying to be, then we think they need to kill someone off. (Just, please not Katherine!)

Some Laughs

From all accounts, this is going to be a pretty heavy episode but that doesn’t mean we can’t get some witty one-liners. If we’re going to be expected to deal with death and crazy drama, then we expect the TVD to bring their “A” game when it comes to those funny character beats they’re so good at delivering. By all means, make us cry but make us laugh, too.
