It’s hard to imagine Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore) ever being an unwelcome sight, but that was apparently the case when he walked into a gas station with some stage blood splattered across his person. Check out the photo evidence!

“Scared a bunch of people accidentally at a gas station today. Damon was a little bloody…” Ian captioned the snapshot of himself with blood splattered across his neck and face. He still manages to be majestic in the shot, which has the blue-eyed actor staring off into the sunlight. What do you think: would you have been afraid?

The photo raises some TVD storyline questions, of course. Most pressingly: Why is Damon so bloody?! Is that his blood or someone else’s? With Damon, it’s always a 50/50 chance, but we’re particularly curious this time given that Ian has been filming with Michael Malarkey (Enzo) and Rick Cosnett (Dr. Wes). Yesterday, they ventured into “the deep South” to film at or near a desolate farmhouse. Is bloody Damon fresh off another one of his acts of revenge against the Augustine Society? Did he kill Dr. Wes for his part in the vampire experimentation — most notably for torturing Damon’s old friend, Enzo, and his girlfriend, Elena? We’ve seen Damon kill for much, much, much less.

If it is Damon’s own blood, has he somehow fallen back into the Augustine Society’s clutches -- perhaps swapping himself for Elena. Or, he could be around to do for Enzo what he promised he would do in 1958: save his friend. After a year of planning a dual escape, Damon left Enzo to die in a fire when he couldn’t easily save him. It seems the choice has been haunting the 160-year-old vamp ever since. Is Damon finally making good on his promise? Better late than never, we guess?

Why do you think Damon is bloody? Do you think it’s his blood or someone else’s? Sound off in the comments below!
