Just when we thought tonight’s episode of The Vampire Diaries (Season 5, Episode 10: “Fifty Shades of Grayson”) was shaping up to be one of our favorites yet, we’ve received news that one of our most beloved characters won’t be making an appearance. Which TVDer is sitting this one out?

Vampire barbie Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola) won’t be in tonight’s episode, according to the interview TVD executive producer Caroline Dries gave The Hollywood Reporter. Boo. We know Caroline can’t be in all of the episodes...but why not? Caroline’s absence in this episode means that the steamy Steferine hookup that happened last week and Caroline was, er, lucky enough to overhear won’t be exposed to the other TVDers until after the hiatus. Check out what Caroline Dries had to say on the subject.

“Well Caroline is not even in this episode, so it will be about who knows and who doesn't know. But in the 100th episode, it comes out in a surprising way,” Caroline dished. Surprising, eh? We can’t wait to see Elena’s face. She’s very protective when it comes to her ex-boyfriend and Katherine is more-or-less her mortal enemy as she has not only tried to kill her, but multiple family members.

The 100th episode (aka Season 5, Episode 11: “500 Years of Solitude”) is going to be a big one for Katherine. Not only is the title a reference to the long-lived vamp-turned-human, but we think she may die in the episode. Sob. Even if the witty woman makes it out of the 100th ep alive, we’re guessing she’ll be much changed. You don’t get an episode named after the desolation of your half-millenium existence and not get some serious character development.

Are you as sad as we are to hear Caroline won’t be in tonight’s episode? And are you as worried about the 100th episode as we are? Sound off in the comments below!

Catch the next episode of The Vampire Diaries on Thursday, December 12 at 8 p.m. ET on the CW.
