Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) has a lot to think about in this week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries (Season 5, Episode 10: “Fifty Shades of Grayson”). Not only is she set to be used as Dr. Wes' lab vamp, but she recently found out her boyfriend has been killing off the Whitmore family as recently as last month — aka when they were dating. How will that affect their relationship moving forward?

TVD executive producer Caroline Dries talked to The Hollywood Reporter about the serious implications of Damon’s homicidal reveal on Elena: “Meanwhile, her relationship [with Damon] is up in the air a little bit because she's just learned that he's killed all of the Whitmore family, which is a horrifying thing to have done — let alone, to have done while they were dating. ‘Who am I to be dating this guy? Can I save him?’ Elena actually comes to — having lived through what she goes through in episode 10 — a surprising conclusion. The way she decides to move forward with Damon won't be what the audience guesses.”

Now, we have to backtrack to what we were thinking before this spoiler. Our first instinct was that Elena would break up with Damon for this horrifying truth — not only has he been killing people whose only crime was being born into a certain family, but he doesn’t seem to have any remorse for it. This is, generally, considered bad. But, perhaps, Elena won’t be so hasty. Perhaps, getting tortured herself might change her reaction to Damon’s crimes.

“The dynamic will certainly change,” Caroline said. “Moving forward, it will continue to hit some speed bumps here and there. I think the audience will be surprised by what we do. I think it's one of my favorite parts of the show.” Ours, too, Caroline. Ours, too.
