Right now, Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) may just be one of the happiest characters on The Vampire Diaries — which, admittedly, isn’t a very competitive field. But it sounds like Bonnie may be about to drop out of the running altogether. What is this we hear about trouble between herself and Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen)? Say it isn’t so!

TVD executive producer Caroline Dries told TVLine the young couple is going to face some challenges in upcoming episodes: “No relationship on this show is safe for too long. They’re going to hit some speedbumps.” Poor, Bonnie! This character just can’t catch a break. First, she dies. Then, when she comes back to life, she has to deal with being anchor — aka experiencing nigh unbearable pain whenever a supernatural creature dies and has to pass through her to get to the Other Side. Now, this?!

So, what form might these “speedbumps” between Bonnie and Jeremy take? It’s hard to predict given that, right now, their storylines are so wrapped in one another. Could it just be normal teenager stuff — the clashing that can come when one person is in college and one still in high school? Or, is it something bigger? Jeremy is still a vampire hunter, a facet of his character that hasn’t really come into play yet this season. Is there more in store for this storyline? Perhaps involving the much-talked-about, but rarely-seen Travelers?

Are you as sad as we are to hear about Jeremy/Bonnie speedbumps? What do you think will come between this just-reunited couple? Share your theories in the comments below!

The Vampire Diaries returns Thursday, January 23 at 8 p.m. on The CW.
