‘Tis the season to reflect on the past year, especially to determine who has been naughty and who has been nice. The Vampire Diaries is a show filled with supernatural scheming, moral greyness, and all-out murdering. So, let’s make like Santa Claus and morally judge these fictional television characters’ actions! What? It’s all in the name of Christmas.

Naughty

Damon: Damon is the first person who would add himself to this list and, he might actually have avoided it if not for the killing spree he continued over the summer. We recently found out that Damon has been killing Whitmores since he escaped the Augustine Society’s cluthes. Most recently, he murdered Aaron’s aunt this past summer. Not cool, Damon.

Elena: We’re actually kind of digging the fact that Elena is on this list. It makes things way more narratively interesting that the gateway character on this show has done some bad things. Top of the list: killing Jesse and standing by as Damon sacrificed Katherine to Silas. (Spoiler: she survived.) Both of these decisions were Elena-logicked away, but that doesn’t mean they were the right ones especially the latter. Maybe Elena really didn’t have any other choice but to kill Jesse to save Damon and maybe Katherine deserved it after years of killing the people Elena loves. But sinking to someone else’s level is still sinking.

Dr. Wes: Dr. Wes makes us laugh, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t super naughty. He experiments on vampires for a living, basically torturing them in the name of science. We don’t care what the results are, turning innocent T.A.s into vampire cannibals is bad.

Katherine: Katherine has made some serious strides in being a good person, but she’s not totally there yet. We had to keep her on the “naughty” list because, in this last year, she sacrificed Jeremy to Silas and tried to kill Elena. Old murdering habits die hard.

Tyler: Not calling Caroline for months, then returning to Mystic Falls for sex before dumping Caroline. Enough said.

Nice

Caroline: Caroline remains a moral marker on a show filled with morally ambiguous characters. Sure, she killed 12 people in the second half of Season 3, but she felt really bad about it, which often doesn’t happen on this show.

Matt: If only one has a pure soul on this show, it is Matt Donovan, who has managed to keep his moral compass while all of this supernatural insanity happens around him. And he just keeps giving everyone a chance. Not only did he spend the summer with Rebekah, who almost killed him at the end of Season 3, but he played Katherine Pierce’s personal trainer in last week’s episode. Basically, he’s the best.

Stefan: Though Stefan can be a bit broody sometimes, he’s generally a moral soul unless The Ripper is unleashed. As he spent much of 2013 either locked in a vault or with amnesia, he hasn’t had much chance to get into trouble. And we have to give him some serious points for the fact that he didn’t turn his humanity off while perpetually drowning. All the presents for Stefan! He could use some cheering up.
