At the start of the 100th episode of The Vampire Diaries, we were caught up between Katherine Pierce (Nina Dobrev) flatlining in the present day and her giving birth to Nadia (Olga Fonda) in Bulgaria in 1490. This contrast between life and death would be something we would go back and forth with the entirety of the episode, and Katherine’s life would be hanging in the balance up to the last moment.

Nadia was on a mission in tonight’s episode — Operation Save Mommy. The desperate offspring even went as far as to bury Matt (Zach Roerig) in Stefan’s safe without the Gilbert ring. As Katherine would say, “Oops!”

Then Nadia approached the Mystic Falls gang to tell them her big plan, to let her mother possess her body, taking full advantage of her Traveler abilities, but in order to save Matt, she would need some volunteers to come with her. Enter, Elena and Stefan. Nadia brought the duo to an abandoned house only to leave them trapped with fellow Travelers who wanted their doppelganger blood. Creepy, right?

Meanwhile, back at the Salvatore mansion, Damon almost suffocated Katherine with a pillow, though Sheriff Forbes assured him that would be murder and urged him not to do it. Damon proceeded to torture Katherine, but with her mind playing tricks on herself, she had enough going on. John Gilbert, Aunt Jenna, and Elijah returned in her mind, each with a different message for the vamp-turned-human.

When Nadia entered and was seemingly ready to let her mother possess her body, Katherine stopped her. Katherine told Nadia that letting her father rip her out of her arms was the biggest mistake she had ever made, and she totally regretted it. This scene was super sad and there may have been tears all around.

“It’s your turn to live,” Katherine told Nadia. ”I’ve made selfish decisions all my life, let me do the right thing for once.” Still weeping.

Right before she actually died, Katherine awoke to see Elena sitting over her. Elena started giving a speech, and let Katherine know that she forgave her for being terrible. But just before Katherine let Nina give her one more dose of medicine, Katherine grabbed Elena and possessed her body with whatever Traveler chant she needed to say.

We’re not going to say we told you so, but we told you so.

Were you surprised that Katherine possessed Elena? What do you think will happen next? Hit the comments and speculate!
