Eek! What will The Vampire Diaries look like now that Katherine is a passenger in Elena’s body? We’re set to find out in Season 5, Episode 12 (“The Devil Inside”), airing January 30 aka an entire week away. Here’s a breakdown of the episode promo to feed our rabid anticipation in the meantime. What do we learn from the action-packed trailer?

There’s more to the spell.

At :01, we see Nadia’s Traveler pal Mia burning someone or something in a creepy crypt. Nadia informs us and Katherine that: “Once Mia does her spell, Elena will be gone forever, and Elena’s body will be yours for good.” Whoa. We didn’t know that was a possible upgrade on the passenger deal! Better figure this supernatural switcheroo out fast, TVDers, or Elena is (burnt) toast.

Katherine’s body is the key.

At :07, we see a faux-grieving Nadia tell Damon, “I’m here for Katherine’s body.” Unfortunately for Team Traveler, Damon’s not giving it up. “You ain’t getting it,” he tells Nadia at :09. This seems callous, even for Damon. Does he know something’s up, or is he just being a jerk? Maybe he’s pissed about the Matt/Elena/Stefan kidnapping Nadia pulled last episode?

Elena is still in there.

In the case of Matt’s possession by Traveler Gregor, Matt still had his turns in controlling his own body. It seems the same is true of Katherine/Elena. At :06, we see Nadia handcuffing Katherine/Elena to a bedframe. Is that a kidnapped Elena Nadia is securing, or a Katherine she knows will eventually turn back to Elena. (Man, this is confusing.) Whoever it is, it seems Katherine will get her fair share of body time. At :10, we see her impatiently ask Nadia: “Did you get my body?” Er, about that…

The brothers Salvatore are united.

At :12, we see Stefan presumably tell Nadia, “Could be a bit of a problem,” implying that he and Damon are united in their ploy to keep Katherine’s body from her daughter. Why is he going along with it? Perhaps, they want answers about the buckets o’ doppelganger blood Nadia’s Traveler friends dripped from Stefan and Elena’s wrists in the last episode? Or, they’re suspicious that they haven’t seen Elena since Katherine “died.” Either way, Nadia’s not cool with it. She wraps her hand around Damon’s neck and demands: “Tell me where she is.” How will this stand-off end?
