We’re a little bit in love with the CW promo department right now. They just gave us a doppelganger-themed promo for The Vampire Diaries that highlights the few-faced shenanigans of Elena, Katherine, Amara, Stefan, and Silas. What does this promo mean for the TVD narrative moving forward, and how many times can Damon make us laugh with exasperated quips about the sheer number of doppelgangers running around Mystic Falls? Read on to find out!

“If I have to hear the word ‘doppelganger’ one more time, I think I’m gonna have to actually learn how to spell it,” Damon laments in the promo, delivering one of our favorite lines from Season 5, Episode 1 (“I Know What You Did Last Summer”). A doppelganger tells us a doppelganger is “someone who looks like someone else” — which we think is a bit of an understatement, but whatever — before launching into some of the many moment of doppelganger-related hijinks this show manages to cover:

  • “I’m Katherine,” Lady K tells Matt matter-of-factly. “Not Elena.”

  • Silas complaining about Elena: “She’s a freaky carbon copy of my one true love, Amara.”

  • “Hello, my shadow self,” Silas greets Stefan before shoving him into a vault and throwing him into a quarry for the entire summer.

  • “I’ve got doppelgangers coming out of my ears,” complains Damon in Season 5, Episode 7 (“Death and the Maiden”)

  • Amnesiac Stefan has the face, but none of the memories: “I have no idea who you people are.”

Classic TVD moments, all! But what does this promo mean for the show moving forward? Well, we know there will be a very intentional act of doppelganger confusion as Katherine is currently possessing Elena’s body as a passenger. We expect many moments of dramatic and comedic value as Katherine-as-Elena tries to woo Stefan and ditch Damon. But would we be reading into the promo too much to wonder if more doppelgangers might be on the horizon?

Though Silas has died, the Other Side is never too far away given that both Bonnie and Jeremy can see ghosts. Might this particular doppelganger return to exact some revenge? We’re not sure how we would feel about that development. We miss Silas’ morbid sense of humor, but too many doppelgangers with not enough to do can make for some unnecessary narrative confusion. How many doppelgangers is too many doppelgangers?

Are you a fan of the doppelganger storylines? What is your favorite doppelganger dynamic? Do you think Silas might return? Sound off in the comments below!
